How to measure typing speed in the browser

Words per minute and accuracy against a sample paragraph — keystrokes stay on this device, and the clock is not a certification exam.

What WPM means here

Typing Speed Test at /tools/typing-speed-test compares what you type with a sample paragraph and reports words per minute plus accuracy. A “word” in WPM is the common five-character convention, not dictionary tokens. Accuracy falls when you skip, insert, or mistype a character. The sample is for practice, not a standardized test such as a civil-service exam. Restart if you want a clean run; closing the tab drops keystrokes.

Steps

1) Open Typing Speed Test. 2) Read the sample once so you are not discovering the text mid-run. 3) Click into the input and type as you would in an editor — do not paste a completed paragraph if you want a honest speed. 4) Stop when the sample is done or when you want the current stats. 5) Try again if you stalled on an unusual word; one run is noisy.

Accuracy vs speed

Chasing a high WPM with 80% accuracy is not useful for production typing. Slow down until accuracy is high, then raise speed. Backspace counts as part of the work; fighting the sample by rewriting whole words costs more than fixing one letter. This page does not grade language quality or programming syntax — Word Count and Character Count measure a finished draft instead.

Worked example

A 200-character sample typed in 40 seconds at five characters per word is 60 WPM if every character matches. One missed comma drops accuracy even if the words look right. Keyboard layout, phone autocorrect, and a Bluetooth lag will all move the number. Treat it as a personal baseline on this device.

Privacy

Keystrokes stay in this tab. Nothing is uploaded. Related: /tools/word-count for draft length, /tools/lorem-ipsum if you need filler rather than a speed run, /tools/remove-extra-spaces if a paste picked up double spaces.

Limits

This is not an official certification, not a coding interview timer, and not a multiplayer race. Fullscreen can help on a laptop. Pause notifications if you want a clean minute. Results are not saved to an account.
